Our Story
The Story Of Fred Boothby
An Unplanned Beginning
Fred’s first step into the short-term rental market was, in his own words, somewhat accidental. While living in Florida, he found himself with an empty house when his wife made extended visits to Michigan. Instead of letting it sit vacant, he listed it on Airbnb and quickly recognized the potential of this market. He also rented out a room in his house while living there with his family to create social opportunities for his homeschooled children. This early experience laid the groundwork for his future ventures.
The Entrepreneurial Pivot
Before diving into vacation rentals, Fred worked as a commercial lender. Seeking a more entrepreneurial path, he left the banking world and relocated his family to Orlando, Florida, to manage a lawn care and landscape business. This move demonstrated his willingness to take risks and embrace new challenges.
Building a Unique Vision
As Fred managed the landscaping business, he continued to explore the vacation rental market. He began converting long-term rentals into short-term properties. During this time, he realized the real opportunity was in creating unique properties and experiences. Inspired by treehouse concepts he saw in Chattanooga, he decided to focus on developing distinctive lodging options. This pivotal decision marked the beginning of his journey to provide memorable and exceptional vacation experiences.

Hi, my name is Fred Boothby. I’ve spent the past eight years in the industry, from local hosting to developing multi-unit communities. I’m the founder of Unique Stays and VR Communities.

I play piano every Sunday at our local church, and my husband and I enjoy long Harley rides through the countryside.

I’m Carl Francis, Controller at Unique Stays, where I manage everything from accounting to pricing and financial strategy. I enjoy working with numbers, building Legos, and going on travel adventures. Outside of work, I spend time with my wife, kids, and the youth at our church.

Unique Adventure Facilitator / Customer Experience Manager
Originally from a small town in New Hampshire, I began my hospitality journey in 1984 on Martha’s Vineyard. After moving to Chattanooga in 1989, I opened a Bed and Breakfast in the historic St. Elmo neighborhood and later became an Airbnb host. I enjoy kayaking, hiking, camping, and biking, and I’m passionate about creating meaningful connections between guests and owners.

I’m Grace, Operations Manager for the Michigan and Indiana regions. I’m passionate about creating smooth, memorable stays through strong systems and attention to detail. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, playing pickleball, and trying my hand at winemaking.
